Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with MobileMuster and now provides MobileMuster black wheelie bins at all recycling facilities. There are also MobileMuster cardboard boxes at all council libraries to enable you to recycle your old mobile phone.

You must place your mobile phone with its battery in the MobileMuster bin if you want your mobile phone recycled.

MobileMuster accepts the following items for recycling:

  • all brands of mobile phones
  • their batteries
  • chargers
  • accessories including cases, headphones etc.
  • mobile wireless broadband devices
  • all cordless phones - e.g. home phone handsets.

Did you know?

  • 99% of the materials used in mobile phones are recyclable.
  • These materials can be used to make new products.
  • There are an estimated 25.5 million old unused mobiles in drawers at home and in the workplace across Australia.
  • Mobiles should not be disposed of in the general waste bin. They have hazardous components and precious recyclable materials.
  • Recycling 50,000 handsets can replace the need to mine over 240 tonnes of precious metal ore.
  • All data left on a mobile will be destroyed by MobileMuster during the recycling process.

About MobileMuster

Since the telecommunications industry introduce its recycling service in 1998, MobileMuster has collected 1,323 tonnes of mobile waste including over 9.8 million mobile phones and batteries plus more than 574,000 kilograms of accessories which have been kept out of landfill.

MobileMuster is the only not-for-profit government accredited mobile phone recycling program. It is the Australian mobile phone industry's official product stewardship program funded voluntarily by most handset manufacturers and all network carriers. This free recycling service enables everyone to play their part in keeping old mobiles out of landfill ensuring they are recycled in a safe, secure and ethical way. None of the items collected are re-sold for re-use.
