2016 is our World major events year

The Sunshine Coast region’s growing reputation as a world-class major events host continues to grow.

And 2016 is standing out as our ‘World’ year for international events.

“We are aiming to brand the region as the premier non-capital city destination for a variety of sports, arts and culture events,” Economic Development – Tourism, Sports and Major Events portfolio councillor, Jason O’Pray said.

In recent years, council has worked hard to attract events such as Tough Mudder, the Ironman 70.3 and the National Touch Footbal Championships,” he said.

“Events like these join established events like the Mooloolaba Triathlon, the Queensland Garden Expo, Caloundra Music Festival, Sunshine Coast Marathon and many more.

“But 2016 is looking a bit special – and our many regional and national events tally is being joined by world events, like the World Outrigger Sprint Titles, and the Ironman 70.3 World Championshiips, to join with huge national events like the Australian Surf Titles.

“More and more sporting, arts and cultural organisations are beginning to see the natural advantages the Sunshine Coast has over so many other regions – including capital cities,” he said.

“Let’s list them: we have the all-year climate; we have the venues; we have the facilities both for training and performing; we have the open spaces and no congestion; we have the quality accommodation; we have the roads and the airport to get here easily … the list goes on.

“But perhaps most importantly, we have the lifestyle and the image which reflects so well upon so many of these events – which means the performers and the audiences enjoy a great place to stay as well as be well-catered at the actual event.”

Cr O’Pray said council would continue to work hard to attract more major events.

“Much of the Tourism and Major Events Levy goes into this effort,” he said.

“Make no mistake: we will become the premier events capital of regional Australia before long.”
