The Nambour Heritage Tramway, a key project within council’s Nambour Activation Plan, remains on track after council voted today to contribute additional resources and progress several key elements.

Council agreed to assist in the purchase of the tram with funds from its existing project allocation and consider additional funding in the future if required.  Council also agreed to lease 28 Mill Street, Nambour, to The Nambour Tramway Company (TNTCo), a not-for-profit company, under a community lease for the purposes of constructing the western terminus building and visitor information centre.

TNTCo will seek in-kind construction support, leveraging volunteered services and materials to help achieve the building of the terminus within the allocated budget.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the project partners had successfully raised more than $650,000 in funding towards the project.

“The Nambour Tramway Company has successfully raised over $650,000 through its fundraising efforts, which include the popular Tram Fest, a vibrant community event for the Nambour and wider Sunshine Coast communities,” Cr Rogerson said.

“This also includes a Federal Government grant of $500,000, awarded through the National Stronger Regions Fund.

“The group should be commended for their successful grant application, fundraising efforts and organisation of the fantastic community event. I know they will continue these efforts.

“This important project remains on track, with Nambour Alliance and The Nambour Tramway Company also progressing with Rail Safety accreditation and Rail Operators accreditation as well as finalising the design of the western terminus.

“Council recognises the importance of this project for Nambour and the Sunshine Coast and will contribute additional funding to ensure it can be delivered for our community and visitors to enjoy.”

The project was designed to re-activate Nambour’s heritage listed tram line through the centre of Nambour that was initially established to transport sugar cane.
