Be prepared for wild weather on Friday and Saturday

The Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group will activate this morning ahead of heavy rain forecast for today and severe weather forecast for Saturday – and is urging the community to be prepared.

The Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) will activate this morning ahead of heavy rain forecast for today and severe weather forecast for Saturday – and is urging the community to be prepared.

Acting Local Disaster Coordinator John Gallina said the LDMG would monitor the situation over the weekend.

“We’re expecting severe weather in southeast Queensland on Saturday, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall, abnormally high tides and dangerous surf,” Mr Gallina said.

“So far the highest rainfall has been 49mm over the last 24 hours in Currimundi, which is welcome rainfall given the dry conditions this year.

“Looking ahead we may see rainfall of 250mm or more in 24 hours, with damaging winds with of up to around 90km/h possible near the coast.

“A strong upper trough will move east into the southern interior of Queensland today, shifting into southeast Queensland on Saturday, before moving off the southern coast during Sunday.

“A low pressure system may develop and slip southwards over southern Queensland waters during Saturday, most likely moving offshore into New South Wales late Saturday or early Sunday.

“Water levels on the high tide on Saturday night and Sunday morning are likely to exceed the highest tide of the year.

“Here on the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore in particular may be affected by flooding.

“Please remember – if it’s flooded, forget it. Never drive walk or ride through flood waters.

"We urge people to visit council's Disaster Hub website, which is also available via council’s new app, for all the information needed to be prepared before, during and after a severe weather event – including weather warnings and road closures.”

The LDMG will issue another update on Friday afternoon to keep the community updated about what to expect on the weekend.

You should:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees
  • Secure loose outdoor items
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines
  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
  • Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and

stay well away from surf-exposed areas - Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items. For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
