Beerwah – growing to a bright future

Building strong links with the Beerwah community is critical to Sunshine Coast Council’s strategy in planning for the future growth of this important hinterland town.

Council wants to find out what people love and value about Beerwah by gathering the thoughts, ideas and opinions of local residents, community organisations and businesses.

Council’s new "Place +" program relies on strong community engagement and Beerwah is an important project using this approach.

The "Place +" program is council’s external delivery program to a community and is underpinned by council’s Place Making Charter.

Place Making is about understanding the social and economic issues surrounding a place just as much as it is about functional and environmental issues. It is about acknowledging individual and community values in understanding the unique qualities of each place, before embarking on change. Those qualities include the physical environment, the history and culture as well as the community’s dreams and hopes for the future.

This Place Making approach will guide council in delivering outcomes that reflect the local values and issues facing a diverse range of communities that make up the identity of the Sunshine Coast.

If you live in Glasshouse Country, get ready to be involved as this exciting project which starts this month.

Council recognises the valuable insights shared by the community through past consultations and wants to build on these contributions.

Division 1 Councillor and Cultural Heritage and Social Policy Portfolio Holder Anna Grosskreutz said that as Beerwah’s population grows and it becomes a Major Activity Centre, it is vital to talk to the people who live and work and play in the town.

"People connected to Beerwah are invited and encouraged to be involved in this project and to commit to working together over the long term, towards a positive future," Cr Grosskreutz said.

"The intent is for Beerwah to have prosperity and vitality, while retaining its strong sense of community.

"Recent approval of several significant projects has shown confidence in the future for Beerwah and we hope that our "Place +" process will identify opportunities and encourage partnerships with the community to maintain this momentum.
