Caloundra fire and emergency services recognised in Australia Day Achievement Awards

Mayor Mark Jamieson has congratulated two local Caloundra fire and emergency services personnel - senior firefighter Greg Toman and brigade training support officer Shaune Toohey on being awarded State Government Australia Day Achievement medallions.

Mr Toman was recognised for his significant involvement in the development of QFES’ specialist remote rescue team, while Mr Toohey was awarded for his high level of leadership that was demonstrated during the rollout of the Government Wireless Network (GWN) project.

Mr Toman plays a leading role in the training and development of remote rescue firefighters, who scale mountains to rescue trapped or injured people.

“This recognition is well-deserved as remote rescues are such a specialised area, requiring specialised training and skills,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“The Sunshine Coast has some of the country’s most beautiful and at times, challenging landscapes and unfortunately accidents do happen.

“Our fire and emergency services personnel often put their own lives at risk while undertaking these rescues at remote and difficult-to-access locations.”

Mr Toohey was recognised for his provision of high level leadership throughout the GWN implementation project.

The GWN provides an integrated and secure radio communications network for Queensland’s public safety agencies.

“Mr Toman’s and Mr Toohey’s dedication – and that of their colleagues – to saving lives deserves this recognition and I congratulate all Australia Day Achievement Medallion recipients for their service to our communities.

“Our fire and emergency services personnel make an important contribution to the safety and well-being of our community.”

In a statement released yesterday, Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said the remote rescue component of QFES was an emerging capability within the service, and Mr Toman had been at the forefront of championing its development to the benefit of the local community.

“It is important to acknowledge the achievements of our locals and we are very proud of their ongoing efforts to protect our communities,” Minister Crawford said.
