Celebrate the opening of Cooroy Library, Mill Place

Imagine reading your new book on the grass roof of your library. You can do this and more at the opening of the new Cooroy Library on Sunday 6 June.

Mill Place, Cooroy is about to come alive when Sunshine Coast Council opens the $9.7 million state-of-the-art library with a free family fun day.

The day will include live entertainment, a bush tucker workshop with local Dale Chapman, a midday barbecue, colourful street performers and a diverse range of events and workshops.

Cooroy Community Precinct Manager Tracey King said the festivities kick off at 10am in the amphitheatre with a traditional “welcome to country” by Dr Eve Fesl, Indigenous elder.

“All the community are invited to watch the official opening ceremony and then to stay for the entire family-friendly day of celebration, with loads of activities and entertainment,” she said.

“The kids will have fun at the tug-of-war and egg-and-spoon races on the grass rooftop of the library or at the many storytelling and craft activities around the precinct.

“Visit the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre to view the art and exhibitions and watch some Hebel sculpting or the talented artists at the ceramics workshop.

“Make sure you head over to the Lower Mill Site to watch the woodworkers in action and learn about the woodworking history of Cooroy and the Mill site.”

Guided tours of the restored boiler house and kilns will run each hour and guided tours of the library will be run every half hour from 11am.

Highlights of the day will include:

10am: Official Opening Ceremony in the amphitheatre.

11am – 12: Dale Chapman’s Bushtucker workshop (bookings required).

11am – 12: Tug-a-War and Egg-and-Spoon races on the library rooftop.

12:15 – 1pm: Gail Robinson’s storytelling in the amphitheatre.

12:30pm – 1:30pm: Peter Mulcahy’s storytelling/Indigenous art workshop (bookings required).

Throughout the day: Performers – Jill Morris, Steven Lang, Judy Barass and more.
