Celebrating volunteers with Sunshine Coast Libraries

Sunshine Coast Libraries are saying thank you to their more than 400 volunteers in the lead up to International Volunteer Day on December 5th.

Volunteers assist with the delivery of many services including Home Library services, genealogy services, “Tax Help”, Justice of the Peace services, and literacy tutoring for the libraries. Without the generous contribution of these volunteers, these services would not be available to our community.

Morning teas are being held across the Coast to celebrate the work done by Sunshine Coast Libraries dedicated volunteers as a thank you for their efforts. Each volunteer will also be presented with a certificate from Sunshine Coast Regional Council for their valuable contribution in 2009.

International Volunteer Day (IVD), December 5, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. IVD is now celebrated worldwide with thousands of volunteers involved in a range of IVD initiatives including clean-up campaigns, conferences, exhibitions, morning teas and many other activities all aimed to highlight the role of volunteers in their communities.

“Volunteers provide such a valuable contribution to the services offered by Council’s Libraries,” said Cr Jenny McKay.

“The delivery of Literacy programmes, Home Library deliveries, and other adjunct services would not be practical without the work of our fantastic volunteers.”

People interested in volunteering for the Home Library Service, where materials are provided to members of the community who are unable to access libraries themselves, are encouraged to contact their local library. As well as bringing a library service to our community, volunteers also provide valuable social contact for these residents.
