Coffee rocks out at Maroochydore Beach
Council will begin stage two of the Maroochydore Beach renourishment program in mid-May, which will see beach dredging machinery mobilised into the Maroochy estuary ready to start pumping sand onto the beach in early June. This will prepare the beach for the coming summer season.
The mercury hasn’t dropped to winter temperatures yet but Council is already preparing Maroochydore Beach for the coming summer season.
Council will begin stage two of the Maroochydore Beach renourishment program in mid-May, which will see beach dredging machinery mobilised into the Maroochy estuary ready to start pumping sand onto the beach in early June.
The boat ramp at Nojoor Road will be closed for a brief period during this time to assist in the mobilisation effort.
Division 8 Councillor O’Pray said each year the Coast’s beaches take a real beating from summer storms.
“Maroochydore Beach hasn’t fully recovered from previous summer storms which is evident in the areas of exposed coffee rock,” Cr O’Pray said.
“To rectify that, we’ll pump over 75,000 cubic metres of sand onto Maroochydore Beach via a pipeline to give it the best chance of recovery and prepare it for future storm impacts.
“There are significant assets immediately next to Maroochydore Beach which need protecting and this work will help with that.
“We’ve also got the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in April 2016, which represents a significant economic opportunity to the local economy, so an added bonus of the nourishment program is getting the beach in the best state for this great event.
“The community did some great work planting out the dunal area after the last renourishment works, so we’ll do all we can to minimise disturbance, that said for those areas that need re-profiling, we’ll undertake a complete revegetation.”
Council completed stage one of beach nourishment works in late 2013 and stage two works will commence in June and continue through to September.
