Construction begins on new pipeline for Maleny

Construction has officially begun on the highly anticipated pipeline between the Landers Shute water treatment plant and the township of Maleny, with the project expected to be completed by June 2010.

The 8.8km pipeline is capable of delivering three mega litres of water to Maleny each day and is a major component of Council’s long term strategy to ensure a sustainable water supply for the community.

Division five Cr Jenny McKay said following years of planning for the project it was exciting to see work get underway on this important piece of water infrastructure.

“Maleny’s water security is a Council priority and I know the community will share my enthusiasm in seeing this critical project get underway,” Cr McKay said.

“Construction is expected to take six months and will be undertaken with the least amount of impact possible to local residents.

“I thank the Maleny community for their patience and understanding during the construction phase and encourage all residents to continue using water conservatively during this time.”

Cr McKay said while the pipeline was vital infrastructure for the water security of Maleny, it also presented environmental benefits for the area.

“Once complete, the new pipeline will negate the need to use the two existing weirs along Obi Obi Creek, which will increase the environmental flow and is ultimately a huge win for our environment,” she said.

Construction of the pipeline was awarded to Brisbane based company Pipe & Civil Constructions and will include pipe laying, building of a new pump station, pump installation, testing and commissioning.
