Council funding provides Kawana AFL girls with new jerseys

The Kawana Park Eagles under-17 girls AFL teams are playing the remainder of this season in new jerseys thanks to Cr Peter Cox arranging a $1000 contribution from council’s Division 3 discretionary funding.

Cr Cox, whose division includes the Eagles’ home base, said he was proud to help local sporting clubs.

“It has been pleasing to witness the phenomenal growth in female participation in AFL this year and I was delighted to assist them with this funding,” Cr Cox said.

“Groups like this are such a valuable part of our communities, providing great opportunities for our youth to participate and enjoy sport.

“It was a privilege to present the under-17 young women with their jerseys.”

Kawana Park Eagles president Mark Vagg said Cr Cox had stepped in to help with funding when the club’s female participation grew quickly.

“Over the last few years we haven’t had female teams, but we aimed to get a team together over the summer and it grew so quickly we ended up with two teams,” Mr Vagg said.

“Cr Cox was able to help out with funding so we could get jerseys for the second team, which was fantastic.

“We are fortunate to have really good people involved with our club for coaching and other roles, including Doug Stuart and his family who organised the girls’ team, but we rely on volunteers, donations and grants so funding like this is very helpful.

“I think our good year for female participation follows the success of the Brisbane Lions women’s side in the inaugural AFLW season and other women’s teams.”
