Council says ‘no’ to 1200 lots at Weyba Downs

Council’s Regional Strategy and Planning Committee today recommended a Development Application for a master planned community at Weyba Downs that would include up to 1200 lots and a local centre be refused.

The proposed site north of Peregian Springs adjoins the Noosa National Park on its northern boundary and is almost completely covered in a variety of vegetation.

Regional Strategy and Planning Committee Chairperson, Cr Vivien Griffin said Council had no hesitation refusing the application, agreeing with the findings of three Queensland state government departments and the Maroochy Plan 2000.

“As well as the prerequisite State review, Council’s assessment is also required and we have found no reason to differ from their recommendation to refuse the Development Application,” Cr Griffin said.

“This is because the proposed development would impact negatively on valuable mapped remnant vegetation, wetlands, waterways, protected fauna, koala habitat and land listed on the Register of the National Estate for wallum vegetation.

“In addition the southern section of the proposed development would increase local and regional traffic, something Council is committed to reduce and manage through sustainable planning and public transport alternatives.

“In a nutshell this Development Application did not meet state and local government planning requirements leaving Council no responsible alternative but to say no.”

Council is expected to adopt the recommendations of the report at its ordinary meeting next week.
