Have you visited Beerwah library lately? Fireweed menace on the Sunshine Coast

An unwelcome visitor—a weed from Southern Africa—has been re-appearing across the Sunshine Coast.  The latest incursion has appeared in newly laid turf in residential gardens, roadsides and new developments.  The infested turf has most likely been brought in from areas outside council boundaries, as fireweed has yet to become established around or near local turf farms.

Please remain alert to this weed as all parts of the plant are toxic to cattle when ingested, and even dried plant material can remain toxic. Smaller infestations can be easily removed by hand however larger infestations may require chemical control.  Seek advice from your local farm suppliers or agricultural produce store for advice.

Light rail investigation on track

Council has released initial findings on the suitability of a light rail transport system for the Sunshine Coast and is seeking community feedback about this future transport option.

I encourage everyone to visit council’s website or local library or customer contact centre to learn more about light rail, and to provide your thoughts and comments.
