Student achievements

One of the highlights of the year for me is attending the local schools’ awards nights. I just love to see the outstanding achievements of the schools and students on their big nights. I recently attended the Coolum State High School awards night and was treated to a heartfelt presentation by Olympic diving gold medallist Matthew Mitcham, some outstanding entertainment from the students, and the special leadership, academic and community awards. It was a great evening and I was really impressed by the students’ achievements. It’s great to share this special evening with students, their teachers and parents, and the community.

Yungar Street

We have been working closely with the residents of Yungar Street to deal with the speeding traffic along their street, and the impact on the residents’ safety.  Although this is essentially a police issue, council recently conducted a traffic study to determine possible solutions to assist local police in managing those in the community that continually break the law.  As a result of that study, council will trial a variety of street markings and signage to help reduce speed. Additionally, the police have agreed to help support the community, once the measures are put in place, with some extra attention along Yungar Street. I would like to thank the community for its input and patience as we try and deal with this issue.

Coolum Civic Centre and Jack Morgan Park

Locally, this project is going to be one of the most important council initiatives since the Coolum Streetscape project.  Over the next few weeks council will provide details of the project, which are based on the many community consultations that have been conducted over the past six years.  A big thank you all of the community groups and nearby residents who have provided more recent feedback on the project.

Arts grants open now

Just a reminder about the current round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants, which closes at 5pm on December 1. This funding supports local artists through skills development. Visit council’s website to apply and contact a grants officer on 5475 7272 or [email protected] if you have any questions.
