Those in need will find warm comfort this winter thanks to the Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle’s generous donation of 10 colourful knitted rugs to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on June 28.

Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle member Barbara Stacey said the group was delighted to respond to community requests and decided to run weekly knitting circles throughout May and donate the proceeds to a local charity.

“The Knitting Circle participants were happy to see the rugs go to locals who are doing it tough this winter,” she said.

“The library proved to be the ideal location for us with its comfortable seating, welcoming staff and a dynamic space for meeting.

“Not only do our members enjoy meeting new people, some are sharing their love of wool and crafting by teaching new skills.

“In addition to the Wednesday sessions, our members spent lots of time at home knitting and sewing the squares.

“Each of the donated rugs had a special message to say the rug was made for you by the Beerwah Library Knitting Group from material donated by the library members. We hope it brings you comfort and a smile.

“The group intends to work on other knitting projects in the future.

“Some members are knitting beanies at present and I’m interested in starting a Twiddle Muff, a knitted muff with tactile items sewn inside and different textures knitted into the outside, to aid autistic and dementia sufferers.”

Debra Koost, from Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, said the 10 beautiful rugs would be used for care packages which will be distributed to those in need in the area.

“The Neighbourhood Centre offers emergency relief for people in need as well as a space for community connections,” she said.

“The knitted rugs with a personalised message are a welcome addition to packages that will be distributed this winter.”

The Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle group welcomes new members and meets every Wednesday from 1.30-3pm. Wool donations are welcome.
