A 2.56m bull shark was caught in the Noosa Waters canals over the weekend, just two days after nets were installed by State Government Shark contractors.

Division 11 Councillor Russell Green said council received a number of enquiries from concerned residents about shark sightings in the Noosa Waters canals.

"The shark catcher has all the State Goverment DEEDI (Fisheries) permits and the removal fee is funded from the Noosa Waters Association benefitted Levy fund.

"Tissue samples, stomach content and fin clippings will be collected from the shark for research into bull sharks throughout Queensland.

"It is not clear how many sharks frequent local canals and this catch reinforces the message that the safest place for people to swim is in patrolled areas.

"Four nets with buoys and lights will remain in the Noosa Waters canal system for the next three to five weeks," he said.

Council recently installed shark warning signage in all artificial saline waterways.
