Link road puts brakes on safety fears

Safer and more efficient.

That’s what commuters and pedestrians can expect when travelling in Tewantin and Noosa after the completion of Sunshine Coast Council’s new link road between Butler Street and McKinnon Drive.

Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan said the $2.5 million project was part of the Noosa / Tewantin area’s major road network upgrades and would open to traffic on 22 April.

"Council has funded this project in its 2009/10 and 2010/11 budgets," he said.

"The Department of Transport and Main Roads also contributed $400,000 towards this project from the Cycling Facilities Implementation Program (CIP)."

Cr Brennan said the new link road would provide an alternate route for travel to destinations beyond Tewantin.

"It has been a long time coming but finally we were able to construct this important road network," he said

"The site received over 2.5 meters of rain during the construction period and the crew worked hard to deliver this project despite this obstacle.

"This new link road will help to remove a lot of the general traffic as well as a lot of heavy vehicles from travelling past the Tewantin School precinct.

"It will also encourage a reduction in traffic volume and speed along Cullinane and Werin Streets."
