Local art prize showcases best of Sunshine Coast
Local artists are vying for a share in $9500 in prize money, with 40 finalists set to unveil their creations as part of the 2017 Local Artist Local Content Art Prize exhibition opening at the Caloundra Regional Gallery next week.

Local artists are vying for a share in $9500 in prize money, with 40 finalists set to unveil their creations as part of the 2017 Local Artist Local Content Art Prize exhibition opening at Caloundra Regional Gallery next week.
The exhibition is held in partnership with Caloundra Regional Gallery and is an annual feature in the gallery’s exhibition program.
Marie Pigott, President of Friends of the Gallery Caloundra – the organisation curating the exhibition – said each of the works reflected the Sunshine Coast’s identity, showcasing everything from coastal and hinterland landscapes, right through to native wildlife, buildings and prominent community members.
“This art prize pays homage to the incredible region we call home through the eyes of those who know it best: its residents,” Mrs Pigott said.
“A range of artworks will be on display between Wednesday, 11 October to Sunday, 5 November, including two-dimensional paintings, hand-coloured collagraph prints, ceramics and clay sculptures just to name a few.”
Mrs Pigott said while traditionally the competition had solely featured two-dimensional works, the successful introduction of a three-dimensional category last year had encouraged a greater breadth of artists to submit their creations.
“More than 100 artists submitted entries in this year’s prize and we now have a number of mixed-media pieces in our line-up of finalists.
“In addition to the Best in Show – which will attract a $3000 prize – judge Rick Everingham will also be awarding Best Watercolour, Best Oil or Acrylic, Best Three-Dimensional and Best Mixed/Other Medium at the official exhibition opening, all of which will receive $1500.
“One lucky finalist will also be presented with the $500 People’s Choice Award on Sunday, 5 November.”
Mrs Pigott said the exhibition would be opened by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson with a gala celebration on Wednesday, 11 October.
“The event will feature live entertainment from Sweet Sounds and guests will be treated to finger food and drinks throughout the evening.
“We’re also hosting a free Artist Talk with five of the finalists at 10am on Thursday, 12 October, where they will share their stories and answer questions regarding their artwork.
“Both events are open to the public and are expected to fill quickly, so bookings are essential.”
