Mayor pitches in for plight of Coast seabirds

Mayor Mark Jamieson today pledged personal support for seabird rescue team the Twinnies identical twins Bridgette and Paula Powers today at Beerwah.

Attending the unveiling of twin – of course – wishing wells for donations at the home of supporter Yvonne Taylor, Mayor Jamieson encouraged Coast residents to get behind the famous pair, who are seeking funding to purchase a dedicated property for bird rehabilitation.

“The Twinnies face two major challenges: the cost of supporting their work; and finding funding for a permanent home, allowing their efforts a sustainable future,” he said.

“Bridgette and Paula do an outstanding job, but they need financial and moral support, and a new location to provide their service.

“They get rescue calls from all over Queensland and travel great distances to do their work.

“I do not underestimate the importance of bird life on the Sunshine Coast. We have a great environment, economy and community but it’s ultimately about community and for people to be able to contribute to these efforts.”

Bridgette – or was it Paula? – said the pair has been rescuing sea-birds for 16 years, while Paula – or was it Bridgette? – explained they wanted to free up some of their time to train new recruits in rehabilitating birds back to the wild.

“We want to train students in rehabilitation so we can do more training in rescue; we need to teach the younger generation about the work we do,” they said

The pair rescues and rehabilitates all birds, “but mainly water birds”.
