A place where men can hone their handyman skills and meet new mates is building a big supporter base in Nambour.

The Men’s Shed, located in the Solutions Adult Learning Centre on National Park Road has enjoyed a rapid rise in popularity since opening in April. Division 10 Councillor Paul Tatton said Sunshine Coast Council had provided funding to help the initiative get off and running.

"Council contributed $11,500 towards the Nambour Men’s shed’s operational costs," he said.

"Having visited the shed I was immediately struck by what a fantastic and important place it is for local men to have available to them.

"This is somewhere men can participate in a range of activities like woodwork or restoring old machines and furniture or just enjoying a chat."

Nambour Men’s Shed co-ordinator Mark Wall said plans were in place to expand the facility and its operating hours due to popular demand.

"From humble beginnings back in April we’ve now got around 40 to 50 regulars who visit the shed and those numbers are steadily increasing," he said.

"We currently operate on Thursday afternoons and on Friday but we’re applying for further funding from council and appealing for sponsors to help us expand our operating hours so more men can benefit from this terrific service 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

"Even in the short time we’ve been operating I’ve seen members of the shed take enormous strides when it comes to making new friends, building a network of emotional support and developing a sense of belonging."
