More improvements for Qld's best beach
If there was ever any doubt, the best beach in Queensland has been confirmed to be on the Sunshine Coast – and it’s about to get even better.
If there was ever any doubt, the best beach in Queensland has been confirmed to be on the Sunshine Coast – and it’s about to get even better.
Caloundra’s Kings Beach swept the board, taking first place in all three of Surf Life Saving Queensland’s inaugural 2015/16 lists of Queensland’s best beaches, being considered Top Beach, Safest Beach and Most Family-friendly Beach in Queensland.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said locals and visitors could soon look forward to an even better beach experience when upgrades to further enhance infrastructure in the area start in late January.
“With upgrades of the pedestrian pathway along Kings Beach and around the surf club, lighting installation, a staircase to the Esplanade Car Park, the development of a new open area on the headland, and the introduction of a tree-shaded plaza due to start in the area after Australia Day, Kings Beach will only improve,” he said.
Cr Dwyer said the titles from SLSQ confirmed the beliefs of many locals.
“When Queensland has more than 6900 km of coastline there was plenty of competition, so having one of our local beaches declared best in the state, in all three categories, is a great accolade for the Sunshine Coast,” he said.
“We can all be proud of the recognition this brings to the surf lifesavers who work hard to ensure the safety of beachgoers, the cleanliness of the area, and the excellent nearby facilities which are all factors that contributed to winning this title.
“Locals and visitors have been enjoying Kings Beach for a long time, but over the past few years the area has also attracted wider attention.
“The Kings Beach redevelopment project was a finalist in the Planning Institute of Australia 2012 Queensland Awards, and the beach contributed to Caloundra winning Queensland’s Tidiest Town 2008 Award and then Australia’s Tidiest Town in 2012.”
Factors considered when selecting the Top 10 beaches in Queensland included the safety of beachgoers, frequency of patrols, services offered, coastal conditions, beach signage, how family-friendly beaches were and overall cleanliness.
SLSQ’s 2015/16 top beaches were:
- Kings Beach – Sunshine Coast
- Cylinder Beach – North Stradbroke Island
- Palm Cove – North Queensland
- Alma Bay – Magnetic Island
- The Strand – Townsville
- Burleigh Heads – Gold Coast
- Four Mile Beach – Port Douglas
- Main Beach – Noosa
