Nambour Skate Park ready to roll

A multi-functional activity centre that caters for all ages – that’s what you’ll now find in Nambour at the corner of Matthew and Ann Streets.

The town’s first purpose built district skate park and youth activity precinct was today unveiled and road tested by some of the region’s most skilled skateboarders. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the $850,000 facility would provide a unique recreational focal point for Nambour.

“This is a very exciting development for the Nambour community, particularly our youngsters who now have a fantastic facility with plenty of rails, ramps and jumps right in the middle of town where they can relax and hone their skills in a number of sports and activities,” he said.

“Future plans for the Nambour Skate Park and Youth Activity Precinct include a basketball half-court, shade structures, terrace seating, pathways, shade trees, climbing structures and community event spaces.”

Riders from the Sunshine Coast Skateboarding Association christened the skate park in spectacular style at today’s official opening and the result was a resounding thumbs up.

Cr Rogerson said a comprehensive community engagement process had enabled council to construct a facility that reflected the community’s wishes.

“As part of council’s youth engagement program, ‘Speak Up Engage’, council partnered with the ‘Project Beyond Limits’ team to deliver the youth engagement components of this project,” he said.

“‘Project Beyond Limits’ involves gifted and talented students of both the Nambour State School and Nambour State High Schools.

The ‘Project Beyond Limits’ team represented the Sunshine Coast Council as Speak Up and Engage ambassadors and engaged with over 900 young people to inform the location and design elements of the new Nambour Youth Activity Precinct.

“Immediately adjacent to this facility is the enormous 35-tonne sculpture of a set of cogs and gears from the old Moreton Sugar Mill in Nambour. This is a proud piece of Nambour’s history that adds a very special element to the place and I’d like to thank Bundaberg Sugar for providing it.

“We’ve also been working with the neighboring RSL club to design a war memorial ‘Heroes Walk’ that will be built with this new facility in the near future as a fitting tribute to our local heroes.”

A special community day will be held on Saturday, November 1 from 10am to celebrate the opening of the Nambour Skate Park and Youth Activity Precinct.
