New cycle and pedestrian bridge officially opened in Maroochydore

A new $2.98 million dedicated cycle and pedestrian bridge across Eudlo Creek on David Low Way officially opened today, providing a safe and easy route between Maroochydore and Bli Bli.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the Queensland Government contributed $2.24 million towards the project, which was jointly funded with Sunshine Coast Council.

“The Queensland Government is committed to building safe, direct and connected cycle networks across Queensland, including on the Sunshine Coast, and creating cycle-friendly communities,” Mr Bailey said.

“The new three-metre-wide, stand-alone pedestrian and cyclist bridge over Eudlo Creek now completes the missing link in the cycle network by providing a dedicated cycle path along David Low Way from Maroochydore to Bli Bli.

“The new bridge allows path users to remain on the northern side of the road bridge, providing direct connection to the Fisherman’s Road intersection where they can safely cross David Low Way using the existing signals.

“It also provides a safer link to and from Bli Bli and Maroochydore, improving connectivity to Maroochydore recreational facilities and its foreshore.

“This is great news for the Sunshine Coast and we are pleased to have worked with council to deliver this vital piece of infrastructure to the Sunshine Coast community.”

Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford said the safer connection was already being enjoyed by residents.

“I know residents have been eagerly awaiting this latest addition to our cycle network, and many are already travelling across it for recreation and commuting,” Cr Hungerford said.

“Separating pedestrians and cyclists from the road in this location is a big improvement and I’m proud to have delivered this for our community.

“Sunshine Coast Council is committed to providing high quality cycling facilities for our community and making it as easy as possible for people to enjoy active modes of transport.”

The new bridge replaced the footway on the existing vehicle bridge to provide a safer crossing alternative over Eudlo Creek.

Council selected an innovative design and construction solution to minimise disruption to the existing vegetation and local environment.

The new bridge is part of a $5.68 million investment by council and the Queensland Government for a cycleway between Maroochydore and Bli Bli, making sustainable travel easier for residents.

The project was funded through the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Cycle Network Local Government Grants and Capital programs, and Sunshine Coast Council’s Capital Works Program.
