New Kenilworth War Memorial ready for Anzac Day

Kenilworth’s new war memorial is on track to be completed and ready for Anzac Day commemorations this Saturday.

The $80,000 memorial was funded and constructed by Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Kenilworth RSL Sub-branch.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson, who joined representatives from Kenilworth RSL Sub-branch and Kenilworth State School on site ahead of the official opening on Saturday, said the memorial provided a dedicated place for the community to hold Anzac Day commemorations.

“This memorial is a fantastic, much-needed addition to the Kenilworth area – it’s very important to Kenilworth veterans and the wider community,” Cr Rogerson said.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to thank the Kenilworth RSL Sub-branch for their contribution to the project.

“The RSL Sub-branch provided details of our ex-servicemen and women for the plaques and worked closely with Council to help deliver a memorial well suited to the local community.”

The memorial, located near the Peter Dobson (Dobbo) car park on Maleny-Kenilworth Road, includes three new flagpoles, a memorial wall, memorial plaques and service emblems, power and lighting, and surrounding landscaping.

Graeme Mickelberg of Kenilworth RSL Sub-branch said the memorial recognised the service of men and women from Kenilworth and the surrounding district who served in wartime and in peace.

“In addition to honouring the young men who served in World War 1 and World War 2 the memorial also honours the service and sacrifice of men and women in conflicts since World War 2, and members of our community currently serving in the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Mickelberg said.

“The generous support and assistance of Sunshine Coast Council, Councillor Greg Rogerson and the Council staff involved in making this project a success is greatly appreciated.”
