Major telco Optus has significantly upgraded its Sunshine Coast mobile network in recent months.

Introducing an additional spectrum of 900Mhz coverage, its customers here on the Coast will now have better connectivity.

Other upgrades have reduced the number of ‘black spots’ in its coverage of the region.

“This is excellent news, not just for existing Optus customers but for the Sunshine Coast overall,” Sunshine Coast Economic Development (emerging industries) portfolio councillor Stephen Robinson said.

“Reliable mobile coverage in the big cities is a given these days, and it is good to see big telcos like Optus bringing the same level of service to regions like the Sunshine Coast.

“With the NBN coming soon, we will be getting the best of both worlds with first-class mobile and landline coverage.”

Council’s Broadband and Digital Economy Manager Michael Whereat said all the major telcos were now taking a stronger interest in expanding their services on the Sunshine Coast.

“We are a large region now – and we have large, 21st-century technological demands – so I am happy to know that a major supplier like Optus is responding to our needs,” he said.

“The network is now fully operational and adds real value to the region’s digital infrastructure.”
