Painting the town

Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with The Old Ambulance Station Nambour, has delivered a series of striking public artworks for the whole Beerwah community to enjoy.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said Sunshine Coast Council was successful in obtaining an Australian Government grant to run a public art and graffiti management project at Beerwah.

“The Drawn Together project was delivered by a team from The Old Ambulance Station Nambour who ran a program of art workshops for young people,” he said.

“The activities took place at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre and the Beerwah Skate Park.

“An objective of the Drawn Together program was to engage with young people of Beerwah and give them a sense of pride and ownership about the community they live in.

“The program provided creative and mentoring opportunities for young people to get involved in legal street art processes and community events and activities.

“Drawn Together will culminate in a community celebration as part of the Glass House Country Festival on October 18.”

The Old Ambulance Station Nambour Chair Michael Doneman said a team of professional artists and arts workers were engaged to deliver the Drawn Together program on behalf of Sunshine Coast Council.

“The program has just been completed in Beerwah and is soon to start in Caloundra and includes a range of creative and, educational initiatives for young people,” Mr Doneman said.

“Our project manager and artist facilitators all have years of experience delivering creative activities for young people.”

Old Ambulance Station Nambour Project Coordinator John Waldron said the Beerwah public artworks had been created by young local skaters who had the opportunity to determine the design for the skate park and to learn spray painting techniques.

“The vibrant artworks cover one large and three narrow vertical sections of the skate ramps” Mr Waldron said.

“We are also constructed an entrance statement to improve the look of the entrance and creatively link the nearby underpass and skate park.

“In addition to the request by Council for the graffiti management program, The Old Ambulance Station will present a community celebration as part of the Glass House Country Festival and a Drawn Together Exhibition at The Old Ambulance Station, Nambour.

“We are currently working with young participants in the Caloundra Drawn Together art workshops which will see a series of striking artworks that will provide a visual creative link from the transit centre to Lamkin Lane.
