Read and Write for Life with Sunshine Coast Libraries

Many of us take for granted the ability to read a book or write a letter, but if we couldn’t, it is great to know that our local libraries can help.

Sunshine Coast Libraries offer free, confidential support with general literacy, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, maths and basic computer skills.

The Read and Write for Life program is open to everyone, from school leavers, parents, grandparents, workers, unemployed, people with physical/intellectual disabilities, migrants and many others.

Community Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries accepted new learners into the program all year round.

“I encourage anyone thinking about getting help to join the wonderful, confidential and supportive environment of our Read and Write for Life program,” Cr McKay said.

“This free course is certainly life changing and one council is extremely proud of.”

To get involved, the first step is to contact our friendly librarians to organise an interview to determine what arrangement will work best based on your goals and interests.

Each learner is then matched with a literacy volunteer and depending on your needs, learners may start in a small class or one-on-one with their own tutor.

Each class is run by a teacher, and each learner in the class has their own literacy volunteer working alongside them.

Sunshine Coast Council’s Libraries have provided free literacy training to adults, with the dedicated support of trained volunteers, for the past 29 years.
