Revitalised Beerwah Library officially open

New more attractive and diverse spaces for people to enjoy while reading newspapers or a favourite book are just some of the benefits of council’s Beerwah Library refurbishment officially opened today (June 5).

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the upgrade ensured the new-look district library kept pace with modern library trends such as more specialised and higher tech environments, while still providing excellent book collections.

“Today’s official launch is a great opportunity for local residents to celebrate their library’s very important and much-loved role as community meeting place,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The thoughtfully revitalised space better meets changing community needs and library trends.

“Our libraries also need to represent and complement the distinct locality and communities they serve and that’s what this upgrade delivers.

“The re-design has integrated the exceptional local lakeside environmental themes and colour palettes.

“These upgrades are critical to ensuring council continues to upgrade its facilities to ensure they provide contemporary services for our growing Glasshouse Country communities.”

During the 2017/18 financial year, 880 new people became members at Beerwah Library, adding to Beerwah Library’s total of 6732 members from across the town and nearby.

“I want to ask the community for their help to promote this is a wonderful library, the community’s library,” Cr Baberowski said.

“If you know someone who hasn’t visited in a while, reach out, tell them about what it has to offer and be as excited as you can about this exceptional community facility.

“I’m also pleased as punch that council was able to restore the public art piece ‘Waterways’ which has been part of council’s Public Art Collection since 2001.

“Waterways was in a sorry state but is now once again a shining example of a collaborative sculptural mosaic water feature. Its located just outside Beerwah Library and tells the story of the waterways from the mountains to the sea.”

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the new discovery layout was a thoughtful change to Beerwah Library.

“It is designed to draw people in and encourages them to explore the vast collection and various reading nooks available,” Cr McKay said.

“The Beerwah Library upgrade demonstrates council’s commitment to investing in library operations and infrastructure to ensure they remain relevant and responsive to new and existing audiences, and continue to have a positive, ongoing influence on our diverse communities.”

The refurbishment included replaced shelving and furniture, as well as creating a more modern experience for our customers.

This project was completed in conjunction with the introduction of Sunshine Coast Libraries’ new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system which makes borrowing and returning items even easier.

The system is a combination of radio frequency and microchip-based technology.
