Safety first with no stopping zone on Kawana Way

Kawana Way, south of the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital construction site, will become a no stopping zone to improve traffic flow and make the area safer.

Council will install yellow line markings on each side of the road on Wednesday, July 15.

Sunshine Coast Divisional councillor Peter Cox said the state-controlled road, which carries numerous trucks, was not designed to accommodate parking on the road’s shoulders.

“However, increased construction activity at the hospital site has seen tradespeople parking in the busy road’s cycleway,” Cr Cox said.

“This causes congestion and impacts on cyclists using the cycleway and drivers who are forced to drive closer to the dividing lines.

“With the permission of the State Government, yellow line markings will be painted on the shoulders to indicate this is a no stopping area on this southern section of Kawana Way.

“Lendlease has given sub-contractors advanced notice this will occur.”

Cr Cox said accommodating parking for tradespeople was the responsibility of the hospital construction company.

“With the number of construction staff at the public hospital expected to peak within the next few months, parking for workers will soon be made available on two levels of the main multi-storey carpark to help alleviate parking congestion,” he said.

”In the lead up to the changes, council has been placing a notice on each car’s windscreen to advise these motorists the area will be regulated.

“Parking officers will be on site to advise motorists of the new regulations in the days following the line marking installation.”

Cr Cox said council would continue to work with all precinct partners to help minimise the impact on nearby residents.

“Council’s parking officers will also continue to conduct regular patrols around the Kawana Health Campus to ensure the safety of cyclists, motorists and pedestrians,” he said.
