SC50 time capsule unveiled today for future

The celebrations that marked the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast throughout 2017 reached their finale today (February 22) with the unveiling of a time capsule that will leave a lasting legacy for the future generations of the Sunshine Coast.

The year-long SC50 program saw more than 72,000 people attend a total of 106 events, projects and activities delivered by council and the community.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson was given the honour of unveiling the time capsule which will be installed in the forecourt of the Eddie De Vere building in Nambour.

“Last year was a landmark year for the Sunshine Coast thanks to the significant progress that has been made delivering economic, environment and community initiatives,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“I am always proud to highlight how our Sunshine Coast is performing and with more than 2000 volunteers contributing 23,000 hours to help ensure the success of the celebrations, I couldn’t be prouder of our 50th anniversary year.

“SC50 highlighted the strength of the community spirit here in our region.

“This time capsule is a way for us to capture our wonderful achievements and memories for future generations.”

Jak Hardy, the 2017 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year and member of the 50th Anniversary Celebration Community Committee, said he was honoured to take part in the unveiling of the time capsule.

“The 50th Anniversary celebrations offered a great opportunity to reflect on our region’s journey and I’m looking forward to playing a role in the next 50 years,” Jak said.

Contained inside the capsule are key moments and highlights of 2017, a letter to the future Mayor of the Sunshine Coast, a selection of articles and news publications, 50th Anniversary program and statistics, and council produced documents, including the 2017 State of our Region.
