Shedders make a day of it
Sunshine Valley Men's Shed members enjoyed a big day out, meeting up with their Maleny counterparts. They shared their learnings and experience and good old-fashioned mateship.
Sunshine Coast Council Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay showed her support to the Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed today, waving the group off as they hopped aboard the Hinterland Connect Bus Service to meet with their counterparts across the hinterland.
About 20 of the 35 Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed members set off early on their day’s outing to share their learnings and experiences with members of the Maleny Men’s Shed at their headquarters.
Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed Treasurer Ron Campbell said they were all excited about today’s inter-shed congregation.
“Cr McKay actually recommended we use the Hinterland Connect Bus Service to connect with our peers over at the Maleny Men’s Shed, so we thought why not make a day of it,” Mr Campbell said.
“With around a thousand Men’s Sheds nationally, the main objective of the groups is to prevent social isolation of men and the associated health risks, and contribute to the community.
“And today provides such a great opportunity for these two Sunshine Coast groups to come together, shoot the breeze, compare notes and learn new things.
“We’ll also enjoy a BBQ lunch and a couple of beers before the return bus trip back to Nambour in the afternoon.”
Cr McKay said she had always been a huge supporter of the West Woombye based Men’s Shed group.
“Men’s Sheds are such wonderful initiatives that provide a place where men of different ages and backgrounds can hang out, work together and talk,” Cr McKay said.
“I was pleased to match council’s community grant of $3,196 from my divisional funding to go towards a new machinery shed for the group.
“The members are going to work together to build this shed to keep various equipment such as the tractor and slasher needed to look after the couple of hectares of land they look after.
“When the men get together they have such a large and diverse set of skills they use to do all sorts of things from building a mobile chicken house and crafting different woodwork to operating a greenhouse and growing and nurturing a garden with produce donated to the needy.”
