A record breaking number of Paralympians will line up for the Suncoast Spinners’ annual wheelchair baskeball tournament at council’s Caloundra Indoor Stadium from January 13-15, 2017.

Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Inc. president Jeremy Synot said 16 past and present elite players and coaches lining up to compete in the Suncoast Spinners’ annual tournament in January.

“The popularity of this event is largely due to the unique three-grade competition, allowing members of Australia's national team to compete against each other,” he said.

January will also see the debut of the University of the Sunshine Coast's Spartans wheelchair basketball team.

Bridie Kean, manager of USC Sports Elite and Education Dual program and two-time Paralympic medallist, will captain the side made up of local students.

“The Suncoast Spinners franchise is in prime position to take home Premier Grade gold adding Tom O'Neill-Thorne to their line up,” Mr Synot said.

“O'Neill-Thorne represented Australia at Rio in 2016 and will be joined by locals Ben Smith, Jake Fulwood and Dylan Childs to name a few.”

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said Caloundra Indoor Stadium was proud to host the three-day tournament which promises some fierce competition.

“With players aged from five to 60 years and ranging from social players through to the elite national level there is sure to be some great action for residents and visitors to catch,” Cr Dwyer said.

“So come along and support our local players and witness some of the most exciting fast-paced action you will have ever seen.”
