Today the Federal Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, the Hon. Senator Stephen Conroy launched the Noosa Clever Networks project, the first of the federally funded Clever Networks projects to be completed, and officially opened the Cooroy Data Centre.
The Noosa Clever Networks project includes a ‘state of the art’ data storage centre providing high-capacity data backup support to the Sunshine Coast; an optic fibre link connecting the new (planned) library at Cooroy and the (planned) Carpenters Lane and Nandroya developments, and seven wireless base stations providing multi-megabit connectivity in the north of the Sunshine Coast.
The Noosa Clever Networks project is part of Connecting the Coast, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s innovative telecommunications project funded by the Federal Government under the Clever Networks Program and supported by project partners Allegro Networks and Mach Technology.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Bob Abbot said Council is leading the way towards a knowledge based regional economy for which this infrastructure is critical.
“Cr Brennan is leading the charge in the economic development of the Sunshine Coast saying that we couldn’t rely on traditional industries of retail and tourism,” Cr Abbot said at the opening today.
“It was also recognised that having access to first class technical infrastructure was vital to enable the Coast to grow its knowledge economy.”
Economic Development and Council Entrepreneurship Portfolio and Division 12 Councillor, Lew Brennan said the Coast has the knowledge and skills to do this, but the $4.1M Federal funding for the Noosa and Maroochy Clever Networks projects was the catalyst that made delivering the infrastructure possible.
The new technology was demonstrated when Cr Brennan was “beamed in” from the Gold Coast in real time, showing tele-conferencing through the new high speed, network to the audience first hand.
“The technology launched today will drive new economy industries and assist the community to do business in creative and innovative ways,” Cr Brennan said.
“Tele-conferencing for example, allows residents to work where they live and has a whole range of sustainable economic and environmental benefits, while the new data centre allows businesses of all sizes to outsource their data storage and retrieval and to securely back up their IT systems.”
