The true story of Li Cunxin showcased on centre stage

The remarkable and inspirational story of Li Cunxin will be showcased centre stage at Sunshine Coast Council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre on Wednesday, July 13 at 10am and 1pm.

You may be familiar of the story of Li Cunxin through the 2009 film, Mao’s Last Dancer, or perhaps you take an interest to the fine art of dance.

Li’s story is a remarkable tale of belonging, hope, and sometimes loneliness that continues to inspire people all over the world to overcome fear and follow their dreams.

Based on Li’s very own children’s book, The Peasant Prince, Monkey Baa Theatre Company aims to encourage the younger generation with the same message of achievement and belonging.

Li Cunxin was a peasant boy growing up in a poor village until one day he was selected to study ballet in Beijing by someone who saw potential in him.

For seven years, he practised from early morning to late at night until he became the best dancer in China.

By the age of 21, and after defecting to America, he became a star.

The Peasant Prince is a unique family event, inviting everyone to share in this captivating and inspirational story conveying strong messages of hope and to follow one’s dream.

The production is a feel good Australian story with a difference to help us understand what makes Australia truly Australian – our cultural diversity.

No matter where you come from – regional and rural Australia or overseas – we all have a journey and we all have a story.
