Based on the inspiring Susanne Gervay novel about her own son’s experiences with bullying, "I am Jack" is a must-see theatre show for parents and children over eight at Council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre on May 19 at 10am and 5.30pm.
Brought to the stage by Monkey Baa Theatre Company, "I Am Jack" will allow kids to meet, and perhaps relate, to Jack – a smart and funny 11-year-old kid, who will take you on a touching and sometimes comical journey as he moves from being a bullied victim to a victor.
In the story, every day Jack wakes up, has breakfast, gets dressed and goes to school, just like anyone else his age.
The only problem is when Jack arrives at the gate he’s faced with relentless bullies who refuse to leave him alone. Jack needs help.
With Jack’s mother being too wrapped up in herself as well as her new boyfriend, and Jack’s teacher, Mr Angelou, being too busy to pay attention to the warning signs, the bullies remain a big problem in his life.
However, things start to improve when Jack discovers the use of self-expression through photography and begins to make sense of his world, his relationships with others, and most importantly, with himself.
Susanne Gervay is an award-winning author of children’s and young adult literature.
She is also a specialist in child growth and development, a teacher and lecturer.
