Long-term vision

Our long-term strategies and plans focus on sustainable practices for the resilience of our coastline into the future.

• Environment and Liveability Strategy - Sets strategic directions to 2041 for a healthy coastline resilient to climate change impacts and supporting sustainable use.
• Healthy Coast Management Plan - Brings together our coastal strategies, plans and actions to guide how we manage our coastal areas.
• Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy – Outlines an adaptation pathway to help manage impacts of coastal hazards such as coastal erosion, storm tide inundation, and expanding tidal areas due to sea level rise.
• Shoreline Erosion Management Plan – Describes key coastal processes, identifies Council assets at risk from coastal hazards and outlines preferred actions to manage coastal erosion.
• Coastal Hazard Adaptation Planning – Explores options to mitigate coastal hazards in priority areas.

On-ground actions

The long-term strategies above guide our daily on-ground actions that play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our coastline for everyone to enjoy.

• Coastal management program - Council’s operational and capital works program to manage for impacts from coastal hazards, including sand nourishment, seawall, groyne, and ICOLL management works
• Coastal environment reserve management - protection and enhancement of coastal habitat (dunal, foreshore, headlands, and beach) in coastal environment reserves, guided by the level of modification and demand of the coastal reserves
• Taking care of our coastal wildlife - planning and projects for the conservation of coastal fauna, such as marine turtles and shorebirds
• Recreation parks management - planning, capital program, and asset management of coastal open spaces parks and gardens 
• Educating our community - the Coastal Discovery Van is a mobile education centre providing education on the coastal processes that shape our beaches and Council works to protect our coastal lifestyle.

• using beach accesses and staying off our fragile dunes
• picking up after your dog
• collecting litter on your regular walks.
