Energy and water
Conserve energy and water, reduce energy and look for renewable sources.
Look at energy and water at your event. Consider supply and use. Conserve energy and water in your planning stage. This can be through the choice of equipment.
Consider renewable energy options and offset your event's energy consumption. Manage water and wastewater production to protect the public and nearby waterways.
Easy wins
Goal: 10% reduction in resource use.
Planning - energy
- Hold events in daylight hours to reduce artificial lighting requirements
- Select equipment that has energy saving features
- Encourage reductions through a 'switch-off' or 'power-down' campaign.
Planning - water
- Find water efficiencies.
Engage and communicate
- Tell event crew and attendees about your energy and water initiatives.
Measure
- Measure electricity and water to establish a baseline.
Take the challenge
Goal: 100% renewables.
Planning - energy
- Complete an energy audit. List all electricity requirements and estimate usage.
- Find out where you need to use power. Look for solar, wind, pedal and hydrogen fuel cell options.
- Purchase 100% or a percentage of certified green power.
- Calculate carbon emissions and offset with local planting schemes. Attendees can pay an embedded price or opt-in option during registration.
Planning - water
- Complete a water audit - list all the water requirements for the event.
- Find out what water sources are available. Consider tap, rainwater, recycle greywater (for non-potable applications).
Engage and communicate
- Promote the connection between local waterways and catchments and event activities
- Post event communicate the amount of kilowatts of energy used and saved at the event.
Measure
- Measure and establish a baseline.
- Purchase GreenPower and/or offset carbon emissions.
Tips for success - energy and water
- Select energy efficient equipment (e.g. use LED lights where possible)
- Identify innovative ways to use renewable energy. This includes bio-diesel for generators, pedal-power cinema or EV/phone charging stations
- Use electric or bio-diesel powered vehicles and shuttle buses
- Use low flow fixtures
- Hire toilet facilities including hand basins that are water efficient. Consider waterless compostable options
- Use environmentally sound cleaning products
- Avoid chemical contamination of wastewater
- Purchase GreenPower for your event
- Use the National Carbon Offset Standards for Events.
