As the Sunshine Coast grows more culturally diverse and embraces inclusion for people with varied abilities, sporting clubs have an exciting opportunity to foster inclusivity and strengthen their teams, both on and off the field.

Embracing inclusion and cultural diversity attracts players, families, and supporters, brings new playing styles and a variety of skills, and creates a welcoming environment for all.

With the Sunshine Coast set to be a host city for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, now is the time to take action and embed welcoming and inclusive practices into your club’s culture.

Through strategic partnerships council is working closely with both Welcoming Clubs and Sport4All to offer valuable support for clubs committed to inclusion.

  • Welcoming Clubs focuses on cultural diversity and fostering a inclusive club culture.
  • Sport4All assists with accessibility for people with disabilities, ensuring facilities, programs and opportunities are inclusive to all abilities.

By investing in diversity and inclusion, your club will help shape a stronger, more welcoming Sunshine Coast and contribute to the success of the Brisbane 2032 Games.

How to start your club’s inclusion journey

 1. Connect with your Sports Development Officer

Your Sports Development Officer can help your club set inclusion goals to feed into your Strategic Plan, and access helpful resources tailored to your club’s specific needs.

2. Assess your club’s inclusiveness

The Welcoming Clubs Benchmarking Tool helps measure your club’s current cultural inclusion practices and provides a road map for improvement. Complete a quick seven minute online survey to gain insights into where your club stands on inclusivity.

3. Access training and education

Welcoming Clubs and Sport4All provides training and education programs designed to equip your club with the skills to foster inclusion, address discrimination, and create a welcoming environment.

Welcoming Clubs offers:

  • Upstander training - Equip members with the tools to address racism and discrimination.
  • Inclusive coaching – Learn how to coach players of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • How sport can heal – Explore how sport plays a role in fostering belonging and unity.
  • Tailor-made training – Customise a program to suit your club’s specific needs.

Sport4All offers education and training guided and delivered by staff with lived experience, allowing them to authentically advocate for accessibility and belonging.

Clubs are also supported through resources to foster equity in participation, not just in playing roles but also in coaching, volunteering, spectating and administrative roles.
