Purpose

The Sunshine Coast Cemetery Plan 2019-2028 (PDF, 2060KB) provides strategic direction to guiding the effective management of council's cemetery network and ensure ongoing service excellence to the community.

The plan will also allow council to address key challenges and opportunities when determining operational planning and budgets for future years.

Overview

Council maintains 18 cemeteries covering more than 60 hectares of public open space across the Sunshine Coast region.

The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's fastest growing regions and with this rapid population growth comes increased demand for cemetery services. The plan, with its four guiding principles, provides a framework for responding to the future needs of council's cemeteries.

  1. Respectful of past, present and future generations, supporting the community's social well-being and conserving the Sunshine Coast's cultural heritage.
  2. Inclusive of beliefs, faith and customs recognising the diversity of the Sunshine Coast.
  3. Sustainable provision of services that balance the social, environmental, economic and cultural needs of the community.
  4. Responsive to the preferences of a growing and changing community.

Community engagement

In February 2019 council invited feedback from targeted stakeholders on the guiding principles, as well as current and future considerations for cemetery services.

Broader stakeholder engagement was conducted through a survey in April 2019.

Feedback from the stakeholder engagement informed the plan and its guiding principles.

Background

The new plan will replace the Sunshine Coast Cemetery Plan 2012-2027, that was adopted on 26 July 2012, and reviewed in 2018-2019.
